Kansas is an American Progressive Rock band formed in Topeka in 1973. Known for the presence of Violinist Robbie Steinhardt, they can almost be seen as the American counterpart to Jethro Tull, as they had an instrument not commonly seen in Rock music, in Tull's case it was the Flute and in Kansas' case it was the Violin.

The band has very few original members today. Keyboardist/Guitarist Kerry Livgren quit for good in 2000, Bassist Dave Hope quit to become an Anglican Priest also in 2000 (though he does perform with the band when they pass through his area), Robbie Left in 2006, and Keyboardist/Vocalist Steve Walsh quit in 2014. The only original members are Guitarist Rich Williams and Drummer Phil Ehart.

Although their biggest hit is Dust In The Wind, among today's generation their most popular song seems to be their second biggest hit, Carry on Wayward Son.

Unlike Styx and Supertramp, WatchMojo have mentioned them twice, but only as an honorable mention and the second time around they only appeared once not even as an honorable mention.

Kerry Livgren converted to Christianity in the late 70s, and the band began to become more and more christian as a result of this, which resulted in Steve Walsh's departure in the early 80's, and he was replaced by Christian Contemporary singer John Elefante. Ronnie James Dio has actually contributed vocals on Kerry Livgren's solo album, Seeds of Change.
